Royal Navy Landing Craft Vs Cremyll Ferry

cremyllferry

A Royal Navy landing craft from HMS Raleigh has collided with the Cremyll Ferry this morning.

There was a crew of three Royal Navy personnel on board the landing craft and the Cremyll Ferry had two passengers on board, plus crew.
The ferry is now out of action having been holed by the vessel near Mayflower Marina.
A Royal Navy spokesperson said: "We can confirm there was a collision this morning between a landing craft from HMS Raleigh and the Cremyll Ferry - a small pedestrian passenger ferry, which operates from Cremyll in Cornwall across the River Tamar to Stonehouse in Plymouth.
"There are no reported injuries. The landing craft is returning to Devonport Naval Base, Plymouth.
"The Cremyll Ferry has been holed and is alongside.
The incident happened in the vicinity of Mayflower Marina at Stonehouse.
"The Queen's Harbour Master is liaising with the Maritime Coastguard Agency and the causes of the incident are being investigated.
"The landing craft was on the way to Plymouth Sound to take part in a training exercise with two small Royal Naval inflatable boats.
"The exercise was to allow the drivers of rigid inflatable boats to practise coming alongside a larger vessel - ie the landing craft."
The ferry has been taken out of service and moved to nearby Mashfords boat yard for damage assessment.
The company is bringing in a replacement vessel.

Tube delays continuing to decline according to new statistics

Delays to passengers on the London Underground are continuing to decline, according to new statistics published by Transport for London.
The statistics, which cover the period 21 July to 14 September 2013, show that disruption to customers has fallen by more than 15 per cent over the last 12 months.
This means London Underground is on track to meet the Mayor’s commitment to reduce delays by a further 30 per cent by 2015.
Phil Hufton, LU’s Chief Operating Officer, said: ‘The Tube is carrying more customers, more safely and more reliably than ever before.
‘We know that London’s population is set to rise to 10 million by 2031, so our task is to make sure that we keep pace with the Capital’s demand. There are of course many seasonal challenges to maintaining the Tube’s reliability, such as the recent storm across the South East, but we continue to invest and improve the network, and also by focusing on every aspect of the Tube to make it as reliable as possible.’
Across the Tube, delays to customers’ journeys have been reduced by 40 per cent since 2008/09 and 54 per cent since 2003.
The trend of long-term improvement on the Tube follows the success of the London Underground Reliability Programme, introduced in 2011.
LU continues to develop and introduce more reliable solutions to meet the Mayor’s commitment of reducing delays on the network.

Network Rail’s Net Debt Stands at £30.6 billion

Network Rail’s Net Debt Stands at £30.6 billion

Network Rail’s (NR) net debt has risen to more than £30.6 billion with the infrastructure company admitting it is failing to meet punctuality targets.
NR said train performance was “still at high levels by historic standards” but added performance had “fallen behind our targets as we struggle to get more and more out of an ever-overloaded network”.
Announcing its half-year results for the period April-September 2013, NR said its net debt was up from nearly £30.36 billion at the end of the 2012/13 financial year to more than £30.61 billion.
For April-September 2013, profit after tax was £870 million compared with £563 million for the same period last year with the increase being due to tax treatment and derivative gains.
Revenue for the period April-September 2013 was nearly £3.27 billion compared with nearly £3.17 billion in the same period last year, while operating profit was just under £1.2 billion compared with nearly £1.23 billion in April-September 2012.
NR said it was investing record amounts in the railways, with £2.74 billion, or £15 million per day. This is 33% up on the same period last year and 53% higher than four years ago.
Listing some of its achievements, NR highlighted improvements at King’s Cross station in London, at Reading station in Berkshire, the Borders Railways project, and electrification and signalling schemes.
The company also mentioned new platforms, lifts, information systems, concourses, footbridges and track.
NR group finance director Patrick Butcher said: “The railway continues to experience tremendous growth and we are responding to that demand through the biggest sustained investment programme since Victorian times.
“With a million more trains and half a billion more passengers than 10 years ago our railways are all but full. We are squeezing all we can out of the existing network and new railway lines, such as HS2, must be built to deliver the step-change in capacity that Britain’s vital rail arteries need.”
He went on: “We continue to invest record amounts to deliver a bigger, better railway for passengers and businesses across Britain. We are also driving down the cost of running Britain’s railway to help make it more affordable in the years ahead.
“Train performance is still at high levels by historical standards, but has fallen behind our targets as we struggle to get more and more out of an ever overloaded network.”

Line closed after freight train derailment near Milford Haven

The train after the derailment

No-one was injured and the incident has been reported to the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB).
Part of the rail network is closed after a freight train derailed in Pembrokeshire.
British Transport Police (BTP) said the locomotive and first wagon stayed upright after the "slow speed" incident near Milford Haven at 22:55 GMT on Wednesday evening.
No-one was injured and it has been reported to the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB).
A bus service is in place between Milford Haven and Haverfordwest.
"On arrival, officers found that the locomotive and first wagon of a freight train had derailed while travelling at low speed," said a BTP spokesperson.
"The locomotive and wagon remained upright.
"There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident which has been reported to the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB).
"No one was injured as a result of the incident."
The train was carrying petroleum products from Murco Petroleum Limited's (Murco) Milford Haven Refinery.
In a statement the company said there was no "loss of product from the train as a result of the incident".
"Network Rail have now assumed control of the incident and recovery of the train, following emergency response by the police and fire services.
"Murco is assisting Network Rail and the train operating companies in the recovery process and subsequent investigation into the cause of the derailment."
Dyfed Powys Police said the road has been closed between Steynton and Tiers Cross so that engineers can right the engine.

Siemens unveil concept Tube train mockup

German engineering firm Siemens has unveiled a full-sized train prototype featuring a smaller-profile body for the London Underground.
The prototype, which is built on the company’s existing Inspiro family, features air-conditioning, wide gangways, smaller-profile body, and an option for fully-automated operation. It is expected to cost £1m per carriage.
Designed to run automatically without the support of a driver, the train will feature LED lighting, onboard tanks with a phase-changing polymer. It is 30% more energy-efficient and 20% lighter than similar trains worldwide.
Siemens Rail Systems UK managing director Steve Scrimshaw was quoted as saying that London, in common with many large cities around the world, faces significant transport challenges as a result of ongoing population growth and increased capacity demands.
Siemens will submit the prototype to London Underground upon invitation to tender.
The prototype will be on display at The Crystal in London’s Royal Victoria Docks between 8 October 2013 and 8 January 2014.

Bakerloo & Northern Lines To Skip Embankment

Northern and Bakerloo line services will not stop at Embankment station for most of next year while escalator work is completed, causing major disruption for passengers.
The work to replace the escalators will start in January and last for ten months, affecting the two lines.
Transport For London says people can walk to or from Waterloo or Charing Cross instead.
The escalators were installed more than 80 years ago and were last refurbished in the 1970s.
All four escalators are being done at once as TfL claims doing them in phases would have increased the time the work would take to “at least 75 weeks”.
Circle and District line trains will continue to stop at Embankment during the work.

Steam on the Met Finale – Sunday 8 December 2013

On Sunday 8 December 2013, for the first time since 1992, London Transport Museum will be running steam trains to Uxbridge along the Metropolitan line. Recently restored Metropolitan Locomotive No.1 and the Victorian ‘Jubilee’ carriage 353 will team up for the last time this year in a fitting finale to the 150th anniversary of the London Underground.
These special journeys will take place between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Uxbridge and are a rare opportunity to experience steam along this particular route for what is likely to be the last opportunity on this section of the line. Metropolitan Loco No.1 will pull the train from Harrow-on-the-Hill to Uxbridge, with a Class 20 diesel hauling the return leg.  Passengers will have the choice of travelling  on the meticulously restored 1892 ‘Jubilee’ Carriage 353 or London Transport Museum’s 1950s ex-British Rail 4TC coaches.

Journey times and Tickets

There will be five trips in total which will be steam hauled from Harrow to Uxbridge and Diesel hauled from Uxbridge to Harrow.  Trains are timed from Harrow at  10.50, 11.50, 12.50, 13.50 & 14.50

Ticket Prices

Travel in Metropolitan ‘Jubilee’ carriage 353: £25
Please note that children under the age of 11 are not allowed to travel in the 353 coach
Travel in Former British Railways 1950s 4TC carriages: £15
Ticket prices includes a free limited edition souvenir brochure. Children under the age of 3 can travel free of charge, but will need to sit on their parent or guardian’s lap.

Tube will go 24 hour at weekends but ticket offices will close

The London Underground is to run a 24 hour service at weekends by 2015, Transport for London has unveiled.
Mayor of London, Boris Johnson and the Managing Director of London Underground, Mike Brown today set out their vision for the future of the Tube, including a new 24-hour ‘Night Tube’ service at weekends and more staff visible and available at stations to help customers buy the right ticket, plan their journeys and keep them safe and secure.
The announcement comes as TfL confirmed plans to shut all ticket offices on the tube and cut 750 jobs.  The trend of ticket sales away from ticket offices has surged over recent years and today less than three per cent of all Tube journeys involve a visit to a ticket office.
Mike Brown, Managing Director of London Underground, said: ‘People are at the heart of this vision – our customers and staff.
‘My commitment to London is that all Tube stations will continue to be staffed and controlled in future, with more staff visible and available to help customers buy the right ticket, plan their journey and keep them safe and secure.’
The 24 hour weekend service will initially impact the Piccadilly, Central, Victoria and Jubilee lines and parts of the Northern Line.
Today’s announcement also revealed that Oyster cards and ticketing will begin to be phased out next year, and replaced by contactless bank card entry.  Wi-Fi coverage will be extended to all stations and a further 27 stations will have their disabled access increased.
London Underground will now enter a 90 day consultation period on its proposals.

Bombardier awarded Class 365 Overhaul Contract

Eversholt Rail has awarded Bombardier Transportation a two–year contract worth in excess of £30 million to undertake the enhancement and heavy maintenance of its fleet of Class 365 trains which are leased to First Capital Connect (FCC).
The work to upgrade the fleet, which carries passengers on FCC’s Great Northern Route, will be undertaken at Bombardier’s Ilford site in Essex, ensuring that the work will remain in the UK.
Eversholt Rail had originally placed an order to maintain Class 365 trains with Railcare. However, the work was put out to re–tender after Railcare entered administration on 31 July 2013.
Reaching this agreement enables work on the Class 365 fleet to resume, with a view to recovering the programme as quickly as possible and delivering the first refreshed train back to FCC. Eversholt Rail took the opportunity to include under–frame heavy maintenance within the scope of the contract to maximise the availability of the 40 four–car fleet.
The Class 365 fleet carries many of the 86,000 passengers travelling daily on the Great Northern Route between London Kings Cross and Peterborough, Cambridge and King’s Lynn. This significant investment will see the trains transformed with refreshed interiors and fully automated passenger information systems.
The first train is expected to enter service by early 2014 delivering significant improvements to the passenger environment. Additional accessibility work will be undertaken from spring 2014 bringing the trains in line with the latest disability regulations. The following improvements will be made (and retrofitted to those trains already refurbished):
  • Two wheelchair bays installed;
  • A new wheelchair–accessible toilet in each 4–carriage unit;
  • A new fully automated passenger information system with audio and visual announcements;
  • Call for aid installed at wheelchair and toilet areas.
Mary Kenny, Chief Executive Officer of Eversholt Rail, said: “We are pleased to have selected Bombardier Transportation. This means that we can continue with our programme to refresh the Class 365 trains, enabling passengers to enjoy the benefits of the improved fleet. We will continue to look at future opportunities to work with Knorr–Bremse Rail Services, the new owners of Railcare.”
David Statham, Managing Director, First Capital Connect, said “I am delighted that our passengers will soon be able to enjoy a more comfortable and modern travel environment as well as a more reliable service. This major investment will deliver brighter, new look trains with much better on–board information. Enhanced accessibility features will also be made to meet the needs of all our passengers.”
Francis Paonessa, Chairman of Bombardier Transportation UK, said: “This investment in the Class 365 fleet allows Bombardier to build on its strategic relationship with Eversholt Rail Group. It is a vote of confidence in our asset maintenance and upgrade capabilities and in the skills of our people in Ilford.”

Buffin' Buffers at Chester

Virgin Voyager strikes buffers at Chester

The 10.10 Virgin Trains service from Euston to Chester struck the buffers at the end of platform 1 in Chester Station on Wednesday, November 20 at 12.10 pm. No other train was involved

A 64-year-old man was taken to hospital with back injuries after the 10.10am train from London Euston failed to completely stop at Chester station.
Nobody else is believed to have been injured in the smash, which happened at around 12.10pm and is being treated as a ‘railway operating incident’.
Passengers said the train was travelling at a slow speed as it prepared to stop and it simply "over ran" into the buffers before hitting a glass wall.
A spokesperson for the train company said: “Virgin Trains can confirm that an incident took place earlier  today at Chester Station.
“It took place at approximately 12:10 and the train involved was the 10:10 Virgin Trains’ service  from London Euston to Chester.
"No other train was involved. The train is currently in a bay platform so it will not affect any other services.”
Pictures tweeted by commuters show debris strewn over the platform and a mangled bicycle.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “At approximately 12.10 today, the 10.10 Virgin Trains service from Euston to Chester struck the buffers at the end of platform 1 at Chester station at slow speed. Emergency services are attending after reports that two passengers have received what are thought to be minor injuries.
“Network Rail is assisting Virgin Trains and the British Transport Police in dealing with this incident. Both the Rail Accident Investigation Branch and the Office for Rail Regulation have been informed.”
A British Transport Police spokesman added: “All coaches of  the five-car train have remained  upright and one man has been taken to hospital by North West Ambulance Service with reported  injuries to his back.
“The incident is currently being  treated as a railway operating incident. The Office of Rail Regulation and  Rail Accident Investigation Branch have been informed.”
